Department Intent

Technology

VISION

The Design and Technology curriculum is designed to develop students curiosity of solving problems, allowing them to work both independently and collectively as a team.  We hope to students develop technical and practical competencies as well as a wider soft skills valued by future employers.  We plan to do this by taking students through the process of design cycle using the iterative process. Students learn the fundamentals of materials properties and functions, identifying potential clients / users groups.  Students use their knowledge to create a suitable design brief and specification respectively, before producing a range of initial ideas, before refinement  by the means of modelling hopefully from 2D, 3D to using CAD, before producing a final prototype and evaluating their success and failures equally.

INTENT

At Bury Church of England High School children receive a Design and Technology curriculum which allows them to exercise their creativity through designing and making in which they will build upon key skills cumulatively. The children are taught to combine their designing & making skills with knowledge & understanding in order to design and make quality products which stretch their abilities. Skills are taught progressively to ensure that all children are able to access the curriculum and learn and practice in order to develop as they move through the school. Evaluation is an integral part of the design process and allows children to adapt and improve their products, this is a key skill which they need throughout their life. Design and Technology allows pupils to apply the knowledge and skills learnt in other subjects, particularly Maths, Science and Art. Pupils’ interests are captured through theme learning, ensuring that links are made in a cross curricular way, giving them motivation and meaning for their learning. Our overall aim is to encourage pupils to push their boundaries in an inclusive and safe environment upholding the Christian values of the school, giving them essential life skills which meet Gatsby benchmarks and prepare them for the world of work outside of formal education.

INTENT

The Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Construction and the Built Environment is for students who want to acquire sector-specific applied knowledge and skills through vocational contexts by studying practical skills used in construction, the principles of technology in construction used to create a better environment in the world, and interpreting the landscape, briefs and other aspects that impact on design and creation of construction as part of their Key Stage 4 learning. The qualification enables students to develop their sector-specific skills, such as using tools and materials safely with vocationally correct techniques, interpreting and understanding the infrastructure for safe and efficient work, and specialist design techniques to enhance communication of design by using realistic vocational contexts. The qualification recognises the value of learning skills, knowledge and vocational attributes to complement GCSEs. The qualification will broaden students’ experience and understanding of the varied progression options available to them.

Food Preparation & Nutrition

VISION

The food and cookery curriculum is designed to develop students curiosity of the world around them through the foods they can eat. The hands on approach is designed to develop skills and confidence using different ingredients and equipment. In food and cookery we want students to understand how simple it is to prepare their own, to develop confidence in using equipment and ingredients to make a variety of different dishes in a safe and hygienic way. To understand how to eat a healthy balanced diet and how food affects our bodies.

INTENT

In food and cookery we want students to develop a range of practical skills which will equip them for later life, preparing food for themselves and their family in a safe hygienic way. understand how food is made and the function of ingredients in food. how ingredients are combined to make different dishes . To understand how and why we eat and how to eat a healthy balanced diet. How different peoples needs change. They will also learn how food affects health, food legislation, provenance processing and manufacture, how to plan and adapt recipes for different needs.
