Enrichment
Across the academic year, pupils at Bury Church take part in a wide range of enriching opportunities that bring the SHINE Curriculum to life. Each year group experiences a purposeful blend of social action, sport and wellbeing, and pupil choice, ensuring that learning extends beyond the classroom and contributes meaningfully to our community.
SHINE curriculum time, structured social action, community engagement, careers preparation, leadership opportunities and targeted enrichment pathways collectively contribute to meeting and evidencing this entitlement.

This structured approach ensures enrichment is not incidental but a protected, monitored and quality-assured entitlement aligned with whole-school personal development priorities.

Year 7 – “Red Card to Racism”
Pupils raise awareness of racism in sport and society by creating powerful pieces of literature and artwork to enter the national Red Card to Racism competition. The project promotes respect, empathy, and courageous advocacy. -
Year 8 – “Knowledge for Change”
Pupils explore global citizenship through a social action unit focused on the Knowledge for Change project in Uganda. They learn about global inequalities and design fundraising activities to support the charity’s work at the end of term. -
Year 9 – “First Aid and Mental Health Awareness”
Pupils complete a first aid and mental health programme linking real-life scenarios to practical skills such as responding to knife wounds, alcohol or drug exposure, and supporting others in distress — empowering them to act responsibly in emergencies. -
Year 10 – “Bury Youth Cabinet and Digital Citizenship”
Pupils engage with Bury Youth Cabinet, exploring social and community tensions, digital safety, and civic participation. They learn how young people can use their voices to influence positive change locally and nationally. -
Year 11 – “Future Pathways and Community Volunteering”
Pupils receive valuable face-to-face encounters with local college and training providers, visit external events, and take part in volunteering projects that strengthen links with local charities and social action initiatives.
In addition to their Enrichment blocks, all pupils take part in whole-school events that celebrate the values of SHINE:

Super September – a celebration of positive behaviour, contribution, and teamwork across the school community, recognising pupils who consistently model Respect, Responsibility, and Resilience.

Culture Day – a vibrant celebration of culture and diversity, combining Black History Month themes and wider influential icons across the curriculum. Pupils experience culture-led lessons in every subject, explore new perspectives, and enjoy a themed cultural menu in the school canteen.

Christmas Celebration - In Autumn 2, pupils have the opportunity to take part in an enriching charitable project that connects spirituality with courageous advocacy.
Pupils work together to prepare for the school’s Christmas Community Celebration, contributing through acts of service such as:
- Making and selling handmade Christmas decorations,
- Collecting pre-loved clothes and essential items to sell to support local charities,
- Preparing donations for the Bury Homeless Shoebox Appeal.
The SHINE Curriculum is further enriched through cross-curricular links, literature and discussion-based learning, and the school’s reading programme, ensuring that pupils engage critically with real-world issues in a safe and supportive environment.
