The Science Department at Bury Church of England High School aims to give all pupils a firm education in the main principles and topics of Science. Pupils are taught in distinct disciplines, by specialist teachers from Year 8 and start their GCSE’s in Year 9.

Lessons are taught using a variety of different techniques, with the emphasis being on understanding the concepts, and being able to apply these to the outside world. Practical is encouraged to allow pupils to “see” what they are learning.

The department is equipped with 5 Science Laboratories and a teaching classroom.
We run a Science club, who are currently working towards their CREST Bronze awards and we have successfully run a number of Deeper Learning Days, allowing pupils to access the CREST Discovery award.

Pupils enter various Science competitions like the Science Challenge Day at Holy Cross, the Big Bang Fair, the Rail Challenge at MOSI and the Salters Chemistry Competition.sub_science_1

Key Stage 3

During Year 7 and 8, pupils follow an in house programme of study, designed by our teachers. This enables the lessons to be tailor-made for our students.

In Year 7, pupils are taught in the same groups which they are in throughout the school. They have 1 Science teacher who will teach them all of the topics. They have 4 hours of Science over a 2 week timetable.

In Year 8, pupils are taught in groups that are independently set by the Science department and move on a rota throughout the year to the different specialisms. This enables pupils to be taught by specialist teachers for the different areas of Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics). They have 4 hours of Science over a 2 week timetable.

The topics pupils cover are:

Y7 – Chemical World, Energy and Forces, Life and Reproduction and Space

Y8 – Acids, Alkalis and the Earth, Photosynthesis, Genetics, Forces, Sound and Light.

Key Stage 4

Exam board – AQA.

In Year 9, pupils begin their GCSE courses.

We run a variety of different courses:

  1. GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics (Separate GCSEs)
  2. GCSE Combined Science Trilogy
  3. AQA Entry Level Certificate and GCSE Combined Science (Trilogy) (a small group)

All examinations are done at the end of Y11 and there is no controlled assessment for these GCSEs.

Pupils get a compulsory of 9 lessons of Science over the 2 week timetable, which equates to 3 of each Science. This is taught by specialist teachers.

Those pupils who opt to study triple, gain an additional 4 lessons per fortnight in Y9 and Y10, and 5 lessons extra in Y11.

Year 11 Revision Timetable

Here is the Y11 revision class timetable for the Science department. You can attend as many sessions as you want, but if you are invited, we expect you to attend. This timetable will run alongside any extra intervention that your class teacher puts on, and remember you can always ask your class teacher for extra help. Revision classes might get cancelled because of meetings or staff absence so please check on the day that they are running.

We run various school trips and Mr Coggan runs our Science Club.

Future Developments

We are looking at working across the curriculum to promote Science in other subject areas to make pupils aware that Science is involved in everything. We are members of the Bury Collaborative and work with other schools to develop resources and ideas.
